Organising a high-level event with senior leaders and key stakeholders from Czech higher education and research and relevant stakeholder organisations, we have explored institutional accountability for professional boundaries, consent, and safety. An inspirational lecture held by Dr Anna Bull from The 1752 Group was followed by a moderated discussion with Czech institutional representatives.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUniversities are places of discovery and debate \u2014 but they are also shaped by power dynamics and professional relationships. With leadership comes responsibility: to set clear standards, to model integrity, and to ensure that institutional cultures promote safety, respect and accountability,\u201c stated British ambassador to the Czech Republic Matt Field in his opening speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session connected evidence on boundary violations and power dynamics to the leadership responsibilities. The focus was explicitly practical: what policies, training, and codes of conduct are needed; what effective implementation looks like; and how institutions should respond to inappropriate behaviour while strengthening academic integrity and trust.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/genderaveda.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/026A1699-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13802\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4997263941149679;width:480px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genderaveda.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/026A1699-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/genderaveda.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/026A1699-430x287.jpg 430w, https:\/\/genderaveda.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/026A1699-475x317.jpg 475w, https:\/\/genderaveda.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/026A1699-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dr Anna Bull delivered a profound talk about how we can progress in setting, discussing, and maintaining professional boundaries in academia. &#8220;Standing here today, I think about survivors, the people who would be grateful for having as many allies as I see in this room,&#8221; Dr Bull said\u2014and we agree.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following panel brought together representatives from research institutions, universities, and civil society who are actively engaged in this area, whether through upholding existing rules or initiating new policies on the topic, specifically:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anton\u00edn Fejfar, Deputy Director, Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matou\u0161 Glanc, Director, Czexpats in Science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dita Jahodov\u00e1, Committee Member, School Ombuds Platform<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blanka Svobodov\u00e1, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kate\u0159ina \u0160\u00e1malov\u00e1, Ombudsperson, Charles University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As the ombudsperson of Charles University Kate\u0159ina \u0160\u00e1malov\u00e1 stated after the empowering event: \u201cSome meetings don\u2019t just inform \u2014 they recharge.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It feels very encouraging to feel like a community with a shared purpose. We need solidarity and allies; we need policies. We need professional boundaries, we need to train our &#8220;ethical muscles,&#8221; and we need to develop a shared sense of professional standards across our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will continue this dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event was a part of the celebrations of International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026, organized by the Centre for Gender and Science, the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
