Mentoring programs: A tool to develop gender equality, diversity, internationalism and interdisciplinarity in research and academia
It will follow up on the 2008 eument-net conference The Future of Mentoring Programs. Linking Programs, Experience and People, with the goal of renewing our former cooperation and network of contacts and establishing new ones. We invite abstracts of 500 words max. describing your mentoring initiative (goals, target audience, duration etc.). Abstracts will be submitted online via standardized template (see below).
Current European policies for research and innovation stress the need for higher internationalization and interdisciplinarity of research connected with higher diversity of the population of researchers as a precondition for socially responsible scientific production. Scientific institutions are encouraged to monitor the structure of their human resources and make an effort to actively support their diversity, particularly in relation to gender, nationality and discipline. Mentoring programs represent one of the tools to encourage and develop that diversity.
As a European network of mentoring programs in various scientific institutions and in diverse fields, eument-net aims to strengthen international and interdisciplinary research collaboration through cooperation of individual mentoring programs and foster a gender equal scientific environment. Join us to discuss our future forms of cooperation and exchange, to enhance our programs’ or institutions’ range of services for researchers and academicians, especially women, and to reflect on mentoring as a career development tool for women and other underrepresented groups in research and academia.
The eument-net workshop will also be useful for those who are new to the field but are interested in improving the professional development of research and academic staff at their institution, setting up mentoring program/s and/or applying for cultural and institutional change projects, e.g. in H2020. The eument-net workshop provides an opportunity for specialists in staff development and representatives of HR departments of research and academic institutions to exchange with experienced coordinators, be inspired, seek advice, make contacts and find prospective project partners to cooperate with. Participants from Eastern Europe are especially welcome. Those interested in applying for eument-net membership are invited to attend the general assembly on 24th November.
This is an open call, not only for eument-net members.

eument-net has been built in 2007 as a European network of mentoring programs for women in academia and research. It has started as a project supported by FP6 and since 2008 it is legally established as association, open to new members. As HR and gender equality policies at European level develop, mentoring programs in research and academia change too. Mentoring program coordinators reflect these changes and transform their programs. Some of them are no any longer for women only and support men´s sensitivity to specific challenges or obstacles women-researchers face in science and academia. eument-net fosters the exchange of experience and best practice among mentoring programs; promotes quality standards and highlights the role of mentoring for the promotion of gender equality; supports the transfer of knowledge and expertise and facilitates cooperation among programs and the promotion of new mentoring activities.
